Do you say it with flowers on a first date? Is a box of chocolates necessary for your second or third date?  This a time honoured tradition of telling someone you really like them. Is it appropriate in the early stages of dating?  The thought is important and generous; women especially love to be wooed in the traditional sense of the word. It shows that you have taken the time to think about your date before the meal, the pictures, or that special walk in the park. It will simply make her feel good about both of you. Flowers have this peculiarity of making any woman feel special, more so than any material gadgets or device possess. I wonder if Adam gave Eve flowers on their first date?  The trick is, not to take flowers with you on a date where she can’t leave them, could get messy. Roses are always a bit tricky, (as well as being potentially lethal) they can make you seem to keen. So although it may seem a little cheesy in these days of high tech on line dating, Most of the ladies I know would be happy to receive flowers.
